The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a system that awards the top 2 teams in college football the opportunity to play in the National Championship Game. Since the NCAA does not have a true playoff system the BCS system is used to crown the best team in college football.
The BCS uses a complex combination of college football polls and computer selection models to rank each team in college football. The 2 highest ranked teams play in the BCS National Championship game that takes place after all other bowl games. The winner of this game is ensured at least a share of the National Championship.
Not only does the BCS work to determine the National Champion, it also selects matchups for other BCS bowl games. These include the Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Orange Bowl in Addition to the BCS National Championship Game. A total of 8 teams are selected to participate in the other bowl games, of which, 6 are the conference champions of each of the 6 BCS conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Big East, PAC-10, and SEC). The results of these games result in the Final college football rankings.
